At least 30 million Americans will have an eating disorder at some point during their lifetime. Eating disorders can impact individuals of all genders and gender identities, ages, ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, and body shapes and sizes. As they are primarily mental health conditions that may cause physical side effects, many people in need of eating disorder treatment show no visible signs and may appear healthy.
With the highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder, eating disorders are serious and often fatal. However, at Seeds of Hope in Pennsylvania, we believe that anyone can fully recover from an eating disorder with the right support.
Anorexia Treatment
Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. A complex disorder, anorexia is characterized by a range of physical and psychological symptoms, including an intense fear of gaining weight, food restriction, weight loss, hair loss, preoccupation with food, feeling cold all the time and fatigue.
Effective anorexia treatments include individual counseling, group therapy, nutrition education and medication management. Individuals in need of anorexia help who are significantly malnourished may require hospitalization to restore their physical health before working toward other aspects of recovery.
Bulimia Treatment
Individuals with bulimia nervosa struggle with binge eating, or eating large amounts of food in a short time in an uncontrollable manner, followed by purging behaviors to try and get rid of the calories consumed. Purging can involve vomiting, laxative or diuretic use, fasting and/or excessive exercise.
Bulimia nervosa’s cycle of bingeing and purging has severe physical consequences, leading to electrolyte and chemical imbalances, damage to vital organs, increased risk of broken bones, hormonal imbalances and more.
Seeking professional bulimia help as soon as possible is necessary to prevent severe health issues. Our staff at Seeds of Hope can provide a level-of-care assessment to determine whether our outpatient programs are right for you or your loved one, or if residential/inpatient care is required.
Binge Eating Disorder Treatment
Affecting millions of people each year, binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the U.S. Individuals with this condition experience binge episodes during which they eat a large quantity of food quickly while feeling as though they have lost control. Binge eating disorder is also characterized by the absence of purging behaviors to “compensate.”
A person suffering from binge eating disorder may benefit from residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient programming (IOP), depending on their unique needs.
Other Eating Disorders Treatment
People struggling with disordered eating that interferes with daily life and functioning may not fit the criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. At Seeds of Hope, our eating disorder specialists are also experienced in treating avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED).
